Do not dream. Look at the facts. The return of real estate is in the long run very lousy. After inflation you should not expect a lot of return. Because real estate has a lot of costs- such as the upkeep, the wear and tear. The most valuable part of real estate is usually not the land, but the building. • Modern Icelandic Turf Houses by PK Arkitektar, Modern Small Design

These small houses blend into the picturesque landscape of southwest Iceland. The two vacation homes face a small lake about an hour’s drive east of Reykjavík. In order to preserve the views from the lake, PK Arkitektar designed the houses to be as unobtrusive as possible. To do so, the architects looked to Iceland’s long heritage of turf houses, whose grass roofs sloped down to ground level and merged with the surrounding vegetation. The green roof of each house was planted with the original vegetation that was removed from its building site. Soil from the foundation excavation was used to form a berm that joins with the roof to provide a windbreak for the patio. The houses appear to be dug into the ground but that is just an illusion as viewing them from the other side shows that they a...

The 1973 Icelandic eruption caused a major crisis for the island and nearly led to its permanent evacuation. Volcanic ash fell over most of the island, destroying many houses, and a lava flow threatened to close off the harbour, the island's main income source via its fishing fleet. An operation was mounted to cool the advancing lava flow by pumping sea water onto it, which was successful in preventing the loss of the harbour. After the eruption finished, the islanders used heat from the slowly cooling lava flows to provide hot water and to generate electricity. They also used some of the extensive tephra, fall-out of airborne volcanic material, to extend the runway at the island's small airport, and as landfill, on which 200 new houses were built. The eruption also formed Eldfell, a compo...

These small houses blend into the picturesque landscape of southwest Iceland. The two vacation homes face a small lake about an hour’s drive east of Reykjavík. The houses appear to be dug into the ground but that is just an illusion as viewing them from the other side shows that they actually sit at ground level. Despite the complexity of the folded roof, the houses have a more or less rectangular plan. The 103 m2 (1,109 ft2) floor plan was designed for efficiency. By having the master bedroom open directly off the living room, only a very short hallway was needed to access the other two bedrooms and the bathroom. The hallway also functions as the entry with a large closet for coats. The exteriors are clad in vertical strips of charred wood. The same pattern is repeated on the ceilings, except with clear wood. Light fixtures are interspersed among the wood strips. The homes are built on concrete slabs, which were etched with acid and then polished for the finish floor. Árbær open air museum in Reykjavík. Viking architecture. The turf church at Árbær farm dates from 1842. It is situated among many other refurbished houses to re-create the flavor of a small Icelandic village. Árbær farmstead is situated in the Elliðaárdalur valley in the Reykjavík suburb of Árbær in the south- west of Iceland, once an agricultural area. The old house is part of the Reykjavík City Museum. An open air museum has been built up on the site, with several older buildings having been relocated to the vicinity of the old farm. One of the main thoroughfares to Reykjavík passed Árbær, which became a popular resting place for travellers on horseback. The earliest written sources date from the 15th century. The last inhabitants moved there in late 19th century, rebuilding the houses during 1890-1918. Árbær consists of six houses and is around 20 m long and 7.8 m wide to the north and 19 m wide to the south. Four houses face the yard, the stables to the north-east, two storey baðstofa, which is divided into three rooms on the lower floor, two storey living room, also divided into three rooms on the lower floor and an entrance to the north-west. The entrance leads to the hearth kitchen and stable. A smithy is located on the other side of the yard. Stables are off to the east, but no other outhouses are present, although the ruins of a barn are still visible. The walls are made with stones and strengur. The gables are made from timber, with three of them clad with corrugated iron. The same houses have corrugated iron roofs, whereas the other three have turf rooftops. Árbær is an excellent example of a turf farm, built using the traditional form, but where new materials have been integrated to enhance the house's performance against the elements.

The eruption also formed Eldfell, a composite volcanic cone just over 200 metres (660 ft) high on the Icelandic island of Heimaey. It formed just outside the town of Heimaey on 23 January1973 and its name means Mountain of Fire in Icelandic.

It has been snowing quite heavily in the South and West of Iceland, with many people not managing to leave their homes or drive their cars. We managed to drive from Selfoss to Reykjavík without trouble and got to admire the beauty that is the snow white nature and landscape of Iceland. Check out our blog and tours on www.mustsee.is

The Pearl (Perlan), a landmark building, on a hill, ouside Reykjavik. In 1991 a dome structure was added, which includes a cafeteria, a dinner-only revolving restaurant at the very top, an exhibition hall, a vista point and of course the hot water tanks, which supply 85% of the homes in Reykjavik with hot water.
